	The built environment is one of the most important factors in our lives - most of us spend a great deal of our time in and around buildings, and they influence so much of what we do. Our buildings last a lifetime or more and are a very significant investment. We want to get them right....
	I started working in an architect's office right out of high school,and was a registered professional before I became a cost estimator and consultant. Not only do I have a wide understanding of the design and construction process, but I never quite lost the streak of idealism that most architects bring to their work.
	Designing buildings is a practical business. If the spaces don't work or they leak or are uncomfortable, they are not performing their function. And constructing them takes a great many practical skills. I'm lucky not only to have a practical frame of mind, but a variety of construction experience and knowledge.
	The wise use of resources is important at every level. As much as possible we want to know what we are paying for, get the best value, and be able to make choices based on rational information
	An estimate is a prediction of how something will be done in the future, based on a set of documents which themselves imagine a future reality...it takes knowledge and experience and often some detective work.
	For most construction projects the estimates become the contract sum, the cost of construction unless there are changes...the owner has a right to know just what the construction will cost. The contractors use the designers' documents to establish a contract price they will have to live by - so they deserve clear documentation.
